Right now it is 13 degrees in NY (and feels like 2 degrees according to The Weather Channel). And yet this is actual LIVE footage of me:

Why? Because strategic cold exposure can be AMAZING for your mind, body, and sleep! Not warming up to this idea, but still curious? Read on...

Cold Showers

I am currently on day 15 of a 20-day cold shower challenge that I started on Spar (an app that I previously raved about HERE, for its effectiveness at long-term behavioral change), and it is pretty much life changing.

This challenge came from the wild Wim Hof, aka “Ice Man”, who holds 26 world records and climbed the bulk of Mt. Everest in shorts and shoes. He has completely taken the cold thermogenesis conversation to the next level and made cold...trendy?

Here’s a new video from Impact Theory that is probably the most important video you’ll watch today.

Hof assures that you can gain plenty of mind/body benefits simply by incorporating a cold shower into your life, every day. The first few days of his prescribed 20-day challenge were tricky. However, fairly quickly people began reporting that the process was getting easier and that they were actually looking forward to their daily cold shower! So what is going on here? Why would people do this?

Cold Thermogenesis Benefits & Studies

Here are a few of the alleged benefits:

  • Lowering body fat
  • Increasing hormone levels
  • Improving sexual performance and fertility
  • Lowering blood sugar
  • Cutting food cravings
  • Improving adrenal function
  • Fixing thyroid issues
  • Enhancing immune function
  • Improving deep sleep quality
  • Increasing pain tolerance
  • Reducing inflammation

All the information above is great, but I think you can guess the one that I’m really interested in… improving sleep quality! Taking this concept to the extreme, Scientific American, even reported on a study that put ice caps on insomniacs heads while they slept and found that, on average, they slept as well as the non-insomniacs! A Dutch study that found that deep sleep (the stage of sleep that for many is the elusive unicorn 🦄), drastically improved with cold therapy. And anecdotally, my sleep and overall health markers have improved over the last 15 days since introducing this practice.

In the event, that you wanna conduct your own self-experiment and see how cold therapy might work out for you, here is a handy-dandy infographic outlining how to ease yourself in.

Got things to say (yay or nay!) about cold therapy or any other obsession?
